Rumor Has It:  Popular Lie Exposed

We’ve all seen it.  An outrageous story spreads across the internet like wildfire.  Suddenly it has 6 trillion shares and likes.

The problem?  It’s completely untrue.

We sometimes believe things as truth without checking the facts, don’t we?  How embarrassing, right?

I’ve learned to examine my thoughts carefully.  A well crafted lie can nonchalantly lead us so far from our desired destination.  When it comes to matters of the heart and our beliefs about the Lord…. It’s critical we examine our thoughts and come to conclusions of truth.

Popular Lie:  “The Lord will never give you more than you can handle.”

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard people say this.  It’s a great thought; the problem is that it’s completely FALSE!    The root of this misinformation comes from the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 10:13.

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful;
he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.
But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

This verse is talking about temptation.  There will always be a way out.  No excuses.

But, nowhere in scripture do we get the idea that God will never give us more than we can handle.

The TRUTH is, God almost always gives us more than we can handle! He wants us to depend FULLY on Him!  Read the Bible.  Person after Person is thrown directly into the deep end!

When we are in over our head, it’s the perfect climate for a miracle.
It’s the place our faith grows.

Believing this lie creates a huge problem.  Since we will eventually experience the WAY more than we can handle, what are you to determine about God?  He’s not there?  He doesn’t care?  He’s cruel?

A Promise From Jesus:  “In this life you WILL have trouble….”  John 16:33

If we don’t expose the lie, we are in danger of becoming like a naive married couple.  At the first sign of hardship we declare, “This is not what I signed up for!  I’m out!”

  1. Amen, Bobbi! I don’t know how many times I’ve yelled at my computer screen, saying, “No! You WILL have more than you can handle! That’s why we need Christ!!!!!”

    1. Irene, you are a perfect example of someone who has been allowed to experience something more than we can handle in our humanness. You are also someone who has chosen to lean into God instead of assume His motives! You are one of my heroes!

      1. Bobbi, that is deeply, deeply humbling. Thank you.
